This is an edited extract from an email from Ann Preston Jones – our Historic England Officer who advises Newquay Old Cornwall Society Scrub Bashers on their work..
‘This year, I shall be taking Mawgan Porth early medieval Village off the Heritage at Risk register. The reasons for removal are multiple and include the fact that the recent investigations associated with development in the area have shown that the site was not perhaps as extensive as first thought, and that there is a very thick layer of protective sand (so less worries about the scrub). However the work that you and NOCAG have been doing is an absolute key – the clincher, in fact!’
The photos below show the site in July 2014 before we started work.
We have cleared the village and maintained it ever since – see the April 2016 photo as an example.
